Ranakpur

Ranakpur is a village in the Pali district of Rajasthan, India, renowned for its Jain temple complex dedicated to Adinath (Rishabhanatha). The Ranakpur Jain Temple is one of the country’s most important Jain pilgrimage sites and is noted for its architectural refinement and extensive marble sculpture.

The temple complex was built in the 15th century, during the period of the Mewar kingdom, with construction completed around the mid-1400s. It is traditionally attributed to a Jain merchant and received patronage from rulers of Mewar, including Rana Kumbha. The sanctuary is constructed from white marble and features 1,444 intricately carved pillars—none of which are alike—spread across 29 halls. The main shrine houses a Chaumukha (four-faced) idol of Adinath. The architecture exemplifies the Māru-Gurjara style, known for its detailed ornamentation and sophisticated craftsmanship.

Ranakpur lies in a valley within the Aravalli Range, about 50 to 60 kilometers north-east of Udaipur, between Sadri and Narlai. The temple complex sits in a wooded, rural landscape and forms a key stop on regional travel routes linking Udaipur with other parts of Rajasthan.

Today the Ranakpur temple remains an active place of worship and a major tourist destination. It attracts both pilgrims and visitors interested in Jain sacred art and medieval architecture. Visitors are advised to observe temple etiquette and modest dress. The site is typically accessed by road from Udaipur, with the best visiting period in the cooler months from October to March.
