Railsplitting

Railsplitting is a term used in rail transport to describe the act of a train separating into two or more parts while in motion. This can occur due to a variety of reasons, including mechanical failure of couplings between wagons or coaches, derailments, or even deliberate actions.

The consequences of railsplitting can range from minor disruptions to severe accidents. In cases of minor separation, the train might come to a halt with minimal damage. However, if the separation occurs at high speed or involves a derailment, it can lead to significant damage to the rolling stock, track infrastructure, and potentially cause injuries or fatalities among passengers and railway staff.

The causes of railsplitting are diverse. Mechanical issues with the couplings, which are designed to connect individual carriages or wagons, are a common culprit. Wear and tear, improper maintenance, or manufacturing defects can weaken these critical components. Derailments, where wheels leave the track, can exert immense forces that overcome the strength of the couplings, leading to separation.
