Radlauf

Radlauf is the wheel arch or wheel well in automotive design, referring to the section of the vehicle’s body that surrounds each wheel. It provides space for the wheel and tire to move as the suspension compresses and rotates, while also shaping the vehicle’s overall silhouette.

The Radlauf consists of several components. The outer part is the wheel arch or fender panel that forms the visible curve of the bodywork. Inside, a wheel-arch liner or inner Radlauf protects the metal from dirt, moisture, stones, and road debris. In many vehicles, a separate component called Radlaufverkleidung or fender liner helps reduce corrosion and noise. Some designs also include a dedicated control edge or lip to manage the transition between the wheel area and the rest of the body.

Function and design considerations include providing adequate clearance for tire movement and suspension travel, protecting the body from debris, and contributing to aerodynamics and aesthetics. The shape and size of the Radlauf influence the vehicle’s width, ground clearance, and overall handling feel. With larger wheels or aggressive styling, manufacturers may use wider Radläufe or add fender flares to accommodate increased tire width and to maintain proper coverage.

In practice, the term is used in German automotive discourse to describe the wheel-arch region, though it is sometimes used interchangeably with Radkasten. Modifications such as Radlaufverbreiterungen (fender flares) are common in customization to alter appearance and accommodate broader tires.
