Radiusmessern

Radiusmessern is the practice of determining the radius of curved features in mechanical parts, tools, and geometric constructions. It encompasses contact and non-contact techniques for fillets, arcs, and rounded edges. The term is used in German-speaking engineering contexts and is sometimes described as measuring radii.

Measurement methods include both contact and non-contact techniques. Contact methods use radius gauges (fillet gauges) with fixed radii, adjustable calipers designed to fit into curves, and specialized roll or wedge gauges. For higher accuracy, coordinate measuring machines (CMM) use tactile probes to fit an arc and compute the radius from measurements. Non-contact methods employ optical systems, laser scanning, and structured-light scanning to capture the curve without touching the surface.

Instruments used for radius measurement include radius gauges, fillet gauges, and radius calipers. For holes or bosses, ring gauges and template arcs are used, along with two-point or three-point measurement methods to confirm the radius.

Applications of Radiusmessern span quality control in machining and mold making, tool design, and components in automotive and aerospace industries, as well as geometry education. Accurate radius measurement is essential for fit, function, and surface integrity in many components, including fillets, bearing seats, and edge transitions.

Standards and accuracy considerations in Radiusmessern depend on the application and required tolerances. Aerospace or precision tooling may demand sub-millimeter or micron-level radii, while general manufacturing permits looser tolerances. Verification relies on calibration artifacts, traceable reference radii, and routine validation procedures.
