Radioreceivers

A radioreceiver, commonly called a radio receiver or simply receiver, is an electronic device that detects and extracts information carried by electromagnetic waves in the radio frequency spectrum. It converts received radio-frequency (RF) signals into usable forms such as audio, data, or video. Typical basic components include an antenna, tuner, RF amplifier, frequency converter or mixer, intermediate-frequency (IF) stages, demodulator, and audio or data output stages.

Early radioreceivers were crystal sets and vacuum-tube designs; later innovations included regenerative and superheterodyne architectures that improved sensitivity and selectivity. The transition from vacuum tubes to transistors and integrated circuits reduced size and power consumption. Modern developments emphasize software-defined radios (SDR), which perform many signal-processing functions in software, allowing flexible support for multiple modulation schemes and protocols.

Radioreceivers operate across bands from longwave and mediumwave to VHF, UHF, and microwave frequencies. They support many modulation types such as amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), single-sideband (SSB), and digital formats including DAB, DRM, and various digital data protocols. Performance metrics include sensitivity, selectivity, noise figure, image rejection, and dynamic range.

Applications span broadcast radio, two-way communications, aviation and marine navigation, cellular and wireless networking, satellite reception, telemetry, and scientific instrumentation. Legal and regulatory frameworks often govern the use of receivers for certain services and monitoring activities.
