Raamistiksidest

Raamistiksidest, also known as frame construction or timber framing, is a building technique where the structural integrity of a building is derived from the use of a timber frame. This frame is composed of large, precisely cut pieces of wood, often oak, pine, or fir, joined together using traditional methods like mortise and tenon joints. These joints are typically secured with wooden pegs or draw-bores.

The basic components of a raamistiksidest structure include posts, beams, and braces. Posts are vertical members that support the horizontal beams. Beams, also known as tie beams or girders, span between posts and carry the load from upper floors or the roof. Braces are angled members that add rigidity and stability to the frame, preventing racking and lateral movement.

Historically, raamistiksidest was a prevalent method of construction across many cultures due to the availability of timber and the strength of the resulting structures. It allows for open interior spaces as the walls are not load-bearing. Instead, they often consist of infill materials such as wattle and daub, brick, or more recently, insulated panels. The exposed timbers can also be a significant aesthetic feature of the building. Modern timber framing often incorporates contemporary engineering techniques and materials while retaining the traditional joinery and aesthetic principles.
