RaBr2

RaBr2, or radium bromide, is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula RaBr2. It is the bromide salt of radium, a radioactive alkaline earth metal. In nature, radium occurs primarily as Ra-226, and RaBr2 is correspondingly radioactive.

Production and structure: RaBr2 can be prepared by a metathesis reaction between a radium salt (for example, Ra(NO3)2) and a bromide source such as potassium bromide: Ra(NO3)2 + 2 KBr → RaBr2 + 2 KNO3. It can also be formed by direct combination of bromine with radium under controlled conditions, though such methods are restricted to licensed facilities. The solid adopts the typical ionic lattice of divalent metal bromides, forming crystalline RaBr2 that is handled under radiological safety protocols.

Physical properties and radioactivity: RaBr2 is a white crystalline solid. It is radioactive and emits alpha particles as Ra-226 decays, with activity depending on the amount of material and the specific radium isotope present. The compound requires shielding and containment to minimize radiological exposure and contamination risk during handling.

Safety, handling, and use: Because of its radioactivity, RaBr2 is subject to stringent regulatory controls and is used mainly in radiochemical research and spectroscopy studies. It is not used in consumer products. Handling is conducted in specialized facilities with appropriate shielding, containment (such as glove boxes or hot cells), and proper waste management. Disposal follows established radioactive waste guidelines.
