RTAleden

RTAleden is a rapid transit line operated by the Regional Transit Authority of the Greater Metropolis area. The line was inaugurated on 12 March 2015 to provide a dedicated corridor between the northeastern suburbs and the central business district. RTAleden runs for approximately 24 kilometres and serves 18 stations, including major interchange hubs at Central Station, Riverside Terminal, and Northgate Plaza.

The line utilizes modern electric multiple units designed for high frequency service, with a typical headway of five minutes during peak hours and ten minutes in off‑peak periods. Each train is capable of carrying up to 1,200 passengers and is equipped with real‑time passenger information displays, on‑board Wi‑Fi, and accessibility features for people with reduced mobility. RTAleden operates every day from 05:30 to 01:00, with a round‑trip travel time of 28 minutes.

Construction of RTAleden involved extensive tunnelling beneath congested streets as well as the extension and upgrade of existing right‑of‑way for above‑ground segments. The project was funded through a combination of municipal bonds, a regional transportation tax, and European Union grants aimed at improving sustainable mobility. Since its opening, the line has reduced travel times between the suburbs and the city centre by up to 35 percent, contributing to a measurable decrease in private vehicle use.

The line has been recognized for its safety record and energy efficiency; its rolling stock incorporates regenerative braking systems that recover kinetic energy during braking. In addition to core service, RTAleden offers a special weekend heritage train service that operates on selected historic routes along the corridor. The authority continues to plan extensions that will link RTAleden to the northern rail terminal, expected to open by 2028.
