RSlinalool

RSlinalool, short for racemic linalool, is the racemic mixture of the two enantiomers of linalool, a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol. Its chemical formula is C10H18O. Linalool exists as (R)-linalool and (S)-linalool, which have distinct olfactory properties and biological activities; the racemate is commonly used in commercial fragrance and flavor applications.

RSlinalool is widely found in essential oils of many plants, including lavender, bergamot, coriander, and citrus species. It is produced in plants through the mevalonate and terpenoid biosynthetic pathways from geranyl pyrophosphate. In industry, racemic linalool can be obtained by direct extraction from natural oils or produced synthetically; enantiomerically enriched samples may be prepared when a specific odor profile is desired.

In perfumery and flavors, RSlinalool contributes a soft floral, slightly sweet scent profile that blends with many other aroma chemicals; however, the two enantiomers differ in odor notes, and the racemate is often preferred for general use due to its balanced scent. Linalool is also valued for its pleasant aroma and relatively low odor threshold.

Safety considerations include that linalool and its oxidized products can be skin irritants or allergens for some individuals, particularly when oxidized to hydroperoxides in air; products containing linalool are typically tested for oxidative stability in cosmetics and fragrances and regulated to limit exposure.
