RSVrelaterede is a Danish term used to describe topics linked to respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It covers diseases caused by RSV, methods of diagnosis, treatment approaches, prevention strategies, and areas of ongoing research connected to the virus and its clinical impact.

Clinical spectrum and risk groups: RSV infection can cause anything from mild upper respiratory symptoms to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. It is a leading cause of hospital admission for infants and young children, and it poses increased risk for older adults and immunocompromised individuals. Severe disease may require hospitalization, supplemental oxygen, or more intensive care.

Transmission and disease biology: RSV spreads mainly through respiratory droplets and close contact. In temperate climates it shows a winter to early spring seasonality. The virus targets the airway epithelium, provoking inflammation and mucus production that leads to airway obstruction in severe cases.

Diagnosis: diagnosis is often based on clinical presentation, particularly in infants during RSV season. Molecular tests (RT-PCR) and rapid antigen assays on nasal or nasopharyngeal samples are commonly used to confirm RSV and distinguish it from other respiratory pathogens.

Treatment and management: most RSV infections are managed with supportive care, including adequate fluids and oxygen as needed. There is no routine antiviral therapy for healthy individuals. Antivirals like ribavirin are considered in select severe cases, especially among immunocompromised patients. Bronchodilators and corticosteroids are not routinely recommended for routine RSV bronchiolitis.

Prevention: preventive measures focus on hygiene, infection control, and reducing exposure. In high-risk infants, prophylaxis with monoclonal antibodies (such as palivizumab) has been used, and newer long-acting antibodies (e.g., nirsevimat) and maternal or pediatric vaccines are under development to reduce RSV burden.
