RSSruvet

RSSruvet is a proposed extension to web feed syndication designed to enhance RSS 2.0 feeds with richer metadata and improved discoverability. It aims to keep RSS compatibility intact while adding a lightweight, extensible vocabulary for per-item metadata, relationships between items, and cross-feed indexing hints.

Origins and development of RSSruvet began in open-source communities around the early 2020s, with contributors seeking a standardized way to convey additional context beyond the basic title, link, and description of RSS. The project circulated primarily on collaborative platforms and documentation sites, where developers discussed use cases such as author provenance, content relations, and richer tagging. An informal specification and reference implementation were published to assist early adopters, with the intent that implementations would be optional and backwards compatible.

Technical overview and features of RSSruvet include an extension namespace that can be added to RSS feeds without breaking existing readers. The extensions are designed to be ignored by clients that do not recognize them, while providing optional fields for items, such as enhanced GUID handling, persistent tags, author and publication lineage, and relationships between related items. The goal is to enable better filtering, searchability, and content syndication workflows without forcing a rigid schema on feeds.

Reception and status have been mixed. Proponents argue that RSSruvet can improve metadata quality and interoperability across platforms, while critics point to fragmentation risks, added complexity, and uneven adoption. As of now, RSSruvet remains a community-driven proposal with varying levels of support and no universal standard body enforcing it.
