RFID standards are crucial for ensuring interoperability and consistent performance across different RFID systems and devices. Without standardization, RFID tags from one manufacturer might not be readable by a reader from another, severely limiting the technology's widespread adoption and application. These standards are developed and maintained by various international and national organizations.

One of the most influential organizations is the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which has developed numerous standards for RFID, particularly in the 13.56 MHz frequency band (high frequency or HF). Examples include ISO 14443 for proximity cards and tags, and ISO 15693 for vicinity cards and tags. These standards define aspects like the physical characteristics of the tag, the communication protocol, data encoding, and the air interface.

Another important standardizing body is the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). For the 860-960 MHz frequency band (ultra-high frequency or UHF) RFID, standards like ISO 18000-6, and its various sub-parts, are widely adopted. These standards cover the air interface protocols for these higher frequencies, enabling longer read ranges and faster data transfer.

Beyond ISO and IEC, other organizations contribute to RFID standardization. GS1 is a global organization that develops and maintains business communication standards, including those for RFID, often building upon existing ISO standards to create application-specific solutions for supply chain management and retail. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) also plays a role, particularly in defining technical specifications for radio equipment. Adherence to these standards ensures that RFID tags and readers can communicate effectively, allowing for seamless integration into diverse applications such as inventory management, access control, and logistics.
