RAIDaware

RAIDaware is an open-source software project that provides visibility and management capabilities for RAID arrays across hardware and software implementations. It aims to unify monitoring, diagnostics, and remediation guidance for storage arrays.

Core features include real-time health monitoring, detection of degraded or rebuilding arrays, SMART attribute collection, performance counters, alerting, event logging, and diagnostic reports. It offers a modular architecture with data collectors (plugins) for various RAID controllers and systems, a local daemon, and a REST API or command-line interface. It supports offline analysis and export of reports to assist in auditing and troubleshooting.

The software runs as a daemon on a host, collects data via vendor tools, kernel interfaces, and SMART data, and stores information locally or in a central repository. It provides client tools for inspection and supports plug-in event correlation and risk scoring to help prioritize repairs and maintenance actions. The design emphasizes extensibility so new controllers and platforms can be added through additional plugins.

RAIDaware is intended for system administrators, data centers, and small to medium-sized businesses that rely on RAID arrays and seek centralized visibility across multiple hosts. It is designed to operate in heterogeneous environments where both software RAID and hardware RAID are deployed.

Compatibility and scope include Linux software RAID (mdadm), ZFS, and various hardware controllers through adapters; Windows support is planned for future releases. The project emphasizes non-disruptive monitoring and read-only data collection to avoid impacting array integrity during operation.

Development and licensing are community-driven, with open-source licensing and contribution guidelines. Documentation, installation instructions, and release notes are publicly available, and users are encouraged to participate in testing, reporting issues, and contributing plugins.
