R22s

R22s refers to the refrigerant Freon 22, also known by its chemical name chlorodifluoromethane. It was a widely used hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) refrigerant in residential and commercial air conditioning systems and some other refrigeration applications for several decades. R22 was favored for its effectiveness and relatively low cost.

However, R22 is classified as an ozone-depleting substance and a greenhouse gas. Due to its environmental impact, its production and import have been phased out in many parts of the world under international agreements like the Montreal Protocol and subsequent regulations. For example, in the United States, the production and import of R22 were banned in 2020.

Despite the ban on new production, R22 is still present in many older HVAC systems. Servicing these systems often requires reclaimed or recycled R22. Technicians must follow specific handling procedures to minimize emissions. The phase-out of R22 has led to a transition towards alternative refrigerants with lower ozone depletion potentials and global warming potentials. These alternatives are generally considered more environmentally friendly.
