Röntgenkontrasztanyagként refers to the use of contrast agents in X-ray imaging. These substances are introduced into the body to enhance the visibility of specific organs, tissues, or blood vessels, making them appear brighter or darker on an X-ray image. This improved contrast allows for more detailed and accurate diagnosis of various medical conditions.

The effectiveness of contrast agents relies on their ability to absorb or transmit X-rays differently from the surrounding tissues. Barium sulfate, a common contrast agent, is often used for examining the digestive system. When swallowed or administered as an enema, it coats the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and intestines, allowing their structure and any abnormalities to be clearly visualized. Iodine-based contrast agents are frequently employed in studies of the urinary tract, blood vessels (angiography), and other organs. These are typically injected intravenously.

The administration of contrast agents can be done orally, intravenously, or sometimes directly into a body cavity. While generally safe, potential side effects can occur, ranging from mild reactions like nausea or a metallic taste to more severe allergic responses or kidney problems, particularly with iodine-based agents. Therefore, a thorough medical history and appropriate precautions are essential before their use. The choice of contrast agent and the method of administration depend on the specific diagnostic goal and the patient's individual health status.
