Qutalmi

Qutalmi is a small town in the Arin Basin, an inland region along the Quta River. It serves as the administrative center of the Qutalmi District and has an estimated population of about 9,200 as of 2022. The town functions as a local hub for agriculture, crafts, and trade, and acts as a waypoint for surrounding rural communities.

The name Qutalmi derives from the ancient Qutal language and is commonly interpreted to mean “ford at the bend,” a reference to the town’s historical position at a river crossing. The terminology reflects the area’s longstanding links to river-based trade and movement.

Geographically, Qutalmi sits at roughly 150 meters above sea level in a temperate climate zone with moderate winters and warm summers. The surrounding landscape features river terraces and farmland, with irrigation systems developed to support crops such as grains and vineyards. The town is connected by regional roads and a minor rail line that has operated since the mid-20th century, facilitating access to larger markets.

Historically, Qutalmi emerged in the 14th century as a river crossing and caravan stop.
