Quisieron

Quisieron is the third-person plural form of the Spanish verb querer in the pretérito indefinido (simple past). It is used to express that several subjects had a desire or carried out an action in the past. In contexts with an accompanying infinitive, quisieron can also convey an attempted action, roughly translating as “they wanted to” or “they tried to.”

Conjugation and morphology: Querer is irregular in the pretérito. The complete set for the pretérito indefinido is: quise, quisiste, quiso, quisimos, quisisteis, quisieron. The form quisieron corresponds to ellos/ellas/ustedes. The root in this tense is quis-; the endings align with the regular pretérito endings.

Uso y matices: Quisieron ayudar puede entenderse como “they wanted to help” o, more commonly, “they tried to help,” depending on context and whether the action was completed or not. En oraciones sin especificar el resultado, suele enfatizar el deseo en el pasado. Con negación o cuando se señala el fracaso, puede traducirse más naturalmente como “they refused to” o “they did not want to” (no quisieron ir; no quisieron ayudar).

Relación con otras formas: El pretérito imperfecto de querer es querían, que describe deseos habituales o continuos en el pasado. El pretérito perfecto compuesto (han querido) se usa para acciones pasadas con relevancia en el presente. Su uso correcto depende del aspecto temporal y del matiz de intención o esfuerzo.

Etimología: Querer proviene del latín vulgar quærere, “buscar, desear,” y la variante pretérita quisieron proviene de un desarrollo irregular del radical en ese tiempo verbal.
