Quillwrapping

Quillwrapping is a traditional craft that involves wrapping and reinforcing the shaft of a writing quill to improve durability, balance, and appearance. Typically performed on goose or swan feathers prepared for use as quill pens, the practice dates to medieval manuscript production and continued into the early modern period, with ongoing interest in calligraphy and historical reproduction today.

Historically, wrapping reduced shaft damage from repeated nibing and handling and helped secure the nib to the quill. Workers used linen or silk thread, parchment or leather strips, and sometimes fine wire. Wrapping generally started near the base of the shaft and progressed toward the nib, with an adhesive such as gum arabic or glue to anchor the bindings and seal against moisture.

Techniques vary. Some quillwrappings cover most of the shaft for uniform strength, while others are applied only to the nib region to protect the tip. Decorative wraps employed contrasting colors, patterns, or metallic threads to identify ownership or to imitate period styles. In restoration contexts, wrapping can stabilize damaged quills.

Contemporary quillwrapping is practiced by enthusiasts of historical crafts, calligraphers seeking traditional tools, and makers of replica writing instruments.
