Qilmagan

Qilmagan is an Uzbek grammatical form that functions as a participial adjective meaning "not done" or "unmade." It is derived from the verb qilmoq, to do, with the negative participle suffix -magan. The form can modify a noun directly (for example, qilmagan ishlar, “unperformed tasks”) or appear in clauses to describe actions that have not been completed.

Formation and usage

Qilmagan is created by attaching -magan to the verb stem qil-, the stem used in do/make constructions. The suffix -magan expresses negation of completion and yields a property or state related to the noun it modifies. In practice, qilmagan often describes things, tasks, or actions that did not occur or remain unfinished, rather than simply being negative in tense.

- Qilmagan ishlar ro'yxati — a list of tasks that have not been done.

- Agar u qilmagan bo'lsa, natija noaniq bo'ladi — If he has not done it, the result will be unclear.

- Bu loyiha qilmagan ishlardan biri bo'lib qolmoqda — This project remains one of the uncompleted tasks.

Grammatical notes

Qilmagan can function in attributive position before a noun or in predicative clauses with appropriate grammatical support, such as bo'lsa or edi forms, to indicate condition or past relevance. It contrasts with the positive participle qilgan (done) and with finite forms of the verb qilmoq (e.g., qilmay, qilmagan). The usage is common in everyday Uzbek as well as in formal writing when indicating that an action was not carried out.
