Püüniste

Püüniste is a traditional Estonian fishing method that utilizes a type of net known as a seine net. This net is designed to be dragged through the water, enclosing fish within its mesh. The name "püüniste" itself refers to this particular type of net and the act of using it for fishing. Historically, püüniste fishing was a communal activity, often requiring a group of people to operate the large nets, especially in lakes and shallow coastal waters where it was most effective.

The technique involves two or more boats, or a combination of boats and people wading from the shore, to deploy and haul the net. The net is typically set in a wide arc, and then slowly drawn towards the shore or a designated landing spot. As the net is pulled in, the opening narrows, concentrating the fish towards the center. The mesh size of the püüniste net can vary depending on the target species, with smaller meshes used for smaller fish and larger meshes for larger catch.

Püüniste fishing is particularly well-suited for open water areas and can be used to catch a variety of freshwater and saltwater species. Its effectiveness depends on factors such as water depth, bottom topography, and fish behavior. While modern fishing technologies have evolved, the püüniste method remains a part of Estonia's fishing heritage, with some practitioners still utilizing this traditional technique, often for subsistence or small-scale commercial purposes. It represents a sustainable and community-oriented approach to harvesting fish from natural water bodies.
