Põldviekkas

Põldviekkas is a Finnish term that translates to "field vole" in English. It specifically refers to Microtus agrestis, a small rodent commonly found throughout Europe and parts of Asia. These voles are characterized by their stocky bodies, short limbs, small ears, and often grayish-brown fur. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on grasses, roots, seeds, and occasionally insects.

Field voles are known for their rapid reproduction rate, with females capable of producing multiple litters per year. Their populations can fluctuate significantly, often exhibiting cyclical boom-and-bust patterns. These fluctuations can have a notable impact on agricultural ecosystems, as field voles can sometimes become pests by damaging crops. However, they also play a crucial role in the food web, serving as prey for various predators such as owls, foxes, and weasels.

Their preferred habitat includes meadows, grasslands, open woodlands, and agricultural fields, where they construct intricate burrow systems just below the surface of the ground.
