Põhitoiming

Põhitoiming is an Estonian term that describes the core operation—the main action a process, system, or service performs to create value. The word combines põhi, meaning base or main, with toiming, meaning operation or action. Although it is not a rigidly defined technical term in every field, it is commonly used in process design, production planning, and software development to emphasize the central task around which other steps are organized.

In manufacturing and operations management, the põhitoiming identifies the core value-generating activity on a production line or workflow. For example, in a milling workshop, the actual cutting of material may be regarded as the põhitoiming, while handling, inspection, and packaging are supportive tasks. In information technology and digital services, the põhitoiming may refer to the primary function provided by a component or service, such as a data transformation step in a processing pipeline.
