Pílulas

Pílulas, also known as oral contraceptives or birth control pills, are a type of medication taken by people, primarily women, to prevent pregnancy. They are a highly effective method of contraception when used correctly. Pílulas typically contain synthetic hormones, estrogen and progestin, or progestin-only, which work by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to block sperm, and thinning the lining of the uterus.

There are several types of pílulas, categorized by their hormonal composition and dosage. Combined oral contraceptives contain both estrogen and progestin, while progestin-only pills, sometimes called the "mini-pill," contain only progestin. The choice of pill often depends on individual health factors, medical history, and personal preferences.

Pílulas are usually taken daily at the same time each day for a specific number of weeks, followed by a week of placebo pills or no pills, depending on the pill's formulation. This cyclical intake mimics the natural menstrual cycle, leading to a withdrawal bleed during the inactive pill week.

Beyond contraception, pílulas can also be prescribed to manage various medical conditions, including irregular menstrual cycles, endometriosis, acne, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, like all medications, pílulas can have side effects, ranging from mild symptoms like nausea and breast tenderness to more serious risks such as blood clots, though these are rare.
