Päätevahvistimet, known in English as power amplifiers, are electronic devices responsible for increasing the amplitude of a signal, typically an audio signal, to a level sufficient to drive loudspeakers or other output transducers. They form a crucial part of most audio systems, from home stereo setups to professional sound reinforcement. The primary function of a power amplifier is to take a low-power input signal and amplify its voltage and current without introducing significant distortion.

There are several common types of power amplifiers, categorized by their operating class. Class A amplifiers offer the highest fidelity but are notoriously inefficient, consuming significant power even when no signal is present. Class B amplifiers are more efficient but can suffer from crossover distortion. Class AB amplifiers are a compromise, combining the efficiency of Class B with the linearity of Class A, making them very popular for audio applications. Higher classes, such as Class D, utilize pulse-width modulation to achieve very high efficiencies, making them ideal for compact and portable devices, though they can sometimes present different sonic characteristics.

The performance of a power amplifier is measured by several parameters, including power output (measured in watts), frequency response, distortion levels (such as Total Harmonic Distortion or THD), signal-to-noise ratio, and damping factor. The power output determines how loud the amplifier can drive the connected speakers. A good frequency response ensures that all audible frequencies are reproduced accurately. Low distortion is essential for maintaining the sonic integrity of the audio signal. The signal-to-noise ratio indicates how much background noise the amplifier generates. The damping factor relates to the amplifier's ability to control speaker cone movement, affecting the bass response.
