Pääsyaukkoja

pääsyaukkoja are a category of mechanical entry devices used to secure thresholds and doorways in Finnish architecture. The term comes from the Finnish words pääsy, meaning “entrance” or “access,” and aukko, meaning “hole” or “opening.” Historically, pääsyaukkoja were simple iron or wooden latches that allowed a door to be closed and locked on a single rail or toggle system. They were common in rural farmhouses and traditional municipal buildings built before the twentieth century.

Typical designs feature a wooden handle that slides along a metal rod, allowing the door to open and close by turning the handle. The latch can be raised or lowered to secure the doorway. Variants include the “pääsyaukko” with a removable padlock, which adds an additional layer of security and was especially useful during periods of political unrest. In modern Finnish construction, pääsyaukkoja are often replaced by more sophisticated deadbolts or electronic access systems, but many historic sites preserve original models for authenticity.
