Päänvammat, also known as head injuries, refer to any trauma to the head. These injuries can range in severity from mild concussions to severe traumatic brain injuries that can cause long-term disability or even death. Causes of head injuries are diverse and include falls, car accidents, sports injuries, and acts of violence.

The symptoms of a head injury can vary greatly depending on the severity and location of the injury. Mild injuries like concussions may present with headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and temporary memory loss. More severe injuries can lead to loss of consciousness, seizures, persistent vomiting, slurred speech, and significant cognitive or physical impairments.

Diagnosis typically involves a medical evaluation, which may include a neurological examination and imaging tests such as CT scans or MRIs to assess the extent of the damage. Treatment depends on the severity of the injury. Mild concussions often require rest and gradual return to normal activities. Severe head injuries may necessitate surgery to relieve pressure on the brain, medication, and extensive rehabilitation programs. Prevention strategies focus on reducing the risk of head trauma, such as wearing helmets during sports and cycling, using seatbelts in vehicles, and ensuring safe living and working environments.
