Päällyslakottuja

Päällyslakottuja, meaning "top coat remover" or "nail polish remover" in Finnish, is a cosmetic product used to dissolve and remove nail polish from fingernails and toenails. It is a common item in personal care routines and is widely available in drugstores and beauty supply stores.

The primary active ingredient in most päällyslakottuja is a solvent. Historically, acetone was the dominant solvent due to its effectiveness and low cost. Acetone is a strong solvent that quickly breaks down various types of nail polish, including lacquers, gels, and glitters. However, acetone can be drying and may weaken natural nails, leading some users to seek alternatives.

Non-acetone removers typically use solvents like ethyl acetate or isopropyl acetate. These are generally considered less harsh than acetone and are often preferred by individuals with sensitive skin or brittle nails. While they may require a bit more rubbing or soaking time to fully remove polish, they are a gentler option. Many päällyslakottuja formulations also contain moisturizing agents such as glycerin or vitamin E to help counteract the drying effects of the solvents and condition the nails and cuticles.

The application of päällyslakottuja involves saturating a cotton pad or ball with the liquid and then pressing it onto the nail, holding it for a few seconds to allow the solvent to penetrate and loosen the polish. The pad is then used to wipe away the dissolved polish. It is important to use the product in a well-ventilated area due to the fumes released by the solvents. After use, washing hands with soap and water is recommended to remove any residue.
