Pääjakolinjoissa

Pääjakolinjoissa refers to the main watershed divides in a geographical area. These are elevated landforms, often ridges or mountain ranges, that separate drainage basins. Water falling on one side of a pääjakolinja will flow into a different river system or body of water than water falling on the other side. The concept is fundamental to understanding hydrology and the distribution of water resources within a region.

In Finland, the major pääjakolinjat are significant features that dictate the flow of rivers and lakes. The most prominent one is the ridge that runs across the country from southwest to northeast, separating the drainage towards the Baltic Sea from that towards the White Sea. Smaller watershed divides also exist within these larger basins, creating numerous sub-basins. These lines are not always sharp ridges but can sometimes be broader, flatter areas where the direction of water flow is less pronounced.
