Pärlivärvide

Unlike saltwater pearls, which are formed in oysters, pärlivärvide pearls are created in freshwater environments. The process begins when a small irritant, such as a grain of sand or a piece of shell, enters the mussel's mantle tissue. In response, the mussel secretes layers of nacre (the same substance that forms the interior of a pearl) around the irritant to protect itself. Over time, these layers build up, creating a pearl.

The color of pärlivärvide pearls varies, but they are often white, pink, or yellow. The most distinctive feature of these pearls is their irregular shape, which is a result of the mussel's natural growth patterns. Pärlivärvide pearls are typically smaller than their saltwater counterparts, with sizes ranging from a few millimeters to about 20 millimeters in diameter.

The cultivation of pärlivärvide pearls is a complex process that requires careful management of water quality, temperature, and the introduction of irritants. The pearls are harvested by carefully opening the mussel and extracting the pearl, a process that can damage the mussel and reduce its viability.
