Pädiater is the term used in several European languages for a physician who specializes in pediatrics, the medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. The word derives from Greek paidos meaning child and iatros meaning physician. In English, the equivalent title is pediatrician. Pädiaters focus on health from birth through adolescence, addressing growth, development, and disease, as well as family education and preventive care.

Training and qualifications typically involve completing a medical degree followed by a pediatric residency. Depending on the country, practitioners may pursue subspecialty fellowships and board certification or its regional equivalent. Ongoing continuing education is common to maintain qualifications and stay current with guidelines for child health.

The scope of a Pädiater includes routine well-child visits, developmental screening, vaccination administration and scheduling, and guidance on nutrition, sleep, safety, and behavior. They diagnose and treat acute illnesses such as infections, asthma, and injuries, manage chronic conditions like diabetes or congenital disorders, and coordinate care with subspecialists when necessary. They also provide guidance during puberty and address mental health concerns in collaboration with families and other health professionals.

Work settings vary: many Pädiaters operate in primary care clinics or community health centers, while others work in hospitals, pediatric wards, or neonatal units. They collaborate with nurses, physician assistants, and pediatric subspecialists (such as neonatology, cardiology, endocrinology, or gastroenterology) to deliver comprehensive care. The role emphasizes preventive care, early detection of developmental issues, and support for families throughout childhood.
