Párafékezni

Párafékezni is a Hungarian term that translates to "to brake with steam" or "steam braking." It refers to a braking system that utilizes steam pressure to slow down or stop a vehicle. This technology was primarily used in early steam-powered locomotives and other heavy machinery.

The principle behind párafékezni involves using the steam generated by the boiler to actuate brake mechanisms. Typically, steam would be directed to a cylinder, where it would push a piston. This piston's movement would then be connected to a linkage that applied friction to the wheels or other moving parts, thus creating the braking force. The intensity of the braking could be controlled by regulating the amount of steam admitted to the cylinder.

While effective for its time, steam braking systems had several drawbacks. They were often slow to respond, could be difficult to modulate precisely, and were susceptible to failures if steam pressure dropped. Furthermore, the presence of hot steam and associated plumbing presented safety concerns. As technology advanced, steam braking systems were gradually replaced by more efficient and reliable methods like compressed air brakes and hydraulic brakes. Today, párafékezni is largely a historical technology, studied in the context of early industrial and transportation engineering.
