Pyöränripustukset, known in English as wheel suspension, are a system of springs, shock absorbers, and linkages that connect a vehicle's wheels to its chassis. Their primary purpose is to absorb shocks and vibrations from the road surface, ensuring a smoother ride for occupants and improving tire contact with the ground. This constant contact is crucial for maintaining traction, which is essential for acceleration, braking, and steering.

There are two main categories of suspension systems: dependent and independent. In a dependent suspension, a solid axle connects the left and right wheels, meaning that the movement of one wheel directly affects the movement of the other. This type of suspension is generally simpler and more robust, often found on older vehicles or heavy-duty trucks.

Independent suspension, on the other hand, allows each wheel to move vertically without directly influencing the other. This generally leads to better ride quality and handling, as each wheel can better adapt to road imperfections. Common types of independent suspension include MacPherson struts, wishbone (or double-wishbone) suspension, and trailing arm suspension.
