Pyykkinarulla is a Finnish term referring to a small hand-powered reel used in domestic laundry to manage a clothesline. The word combines pyykki meaning laundry and narulla meaning reel or roller. The device is chiefly documented in rural Finnish households in the 19th and early 20th centuries, though surviving references are sparse and regionally variable.

Design and construction typically feature a short wooden frame with a central axle and a grooved wheel or spool capable of winding cord. Some versions used a folding handle or small crank; the rope or line would be wound onto the spool to shorten or extend the clothesline. Materials commonly included local timber such as ash or pine, with metal pins or wooden axles to serve as the rotating axis. The reel was designed to be compact and operable with one hand.

Function and use centered on managing a clothesline rather than washing. The pyykkinarulla could be placed on a beam or post, allowing the user to wind rope to raise, lower, or adjust the tension of a line running between structures or trees. When not in use, surplus rope could be wound onto the reel to keep the setup tidy or to store materials for later use. In some households, multiple reels aided the management of several parallel lines.

Historical context and modern status: With the rise of mass-produced metal clotheslines, retractable reels, and indoor drying methods, the pyykkinarulla declined in common use during the mid-20th century.
