Puutuneisuutena

It is formed from the noun puutuneisuus, which denotes a state of being lacking, together with the instrumental suffix -na/-nä, which marks a role or function. The result is used to frame a following proposition, clause, or element as a deficiency in a given context.

Etymology and formation: The word builds on the concept of puute (lack) and the noun-forming suffix -neisuus, yielding puutuneisuus, the state of lacking. The suffix -na/-nä then signals “as” or “in the capacity of,” producing puutuneisuutena to mean “as a deficiency.” The construction is most commonly encountered in formal Finnish writing.

Usage: Puutuneisuutena is chiefly found in analytical, academic, or critical prose, including linguistics, sociology, and policy analysis. It allows the author to present a claim, condition, or feature not merely as a fact, but as a deficiency that warrants attention or remediation. Example: “Tämän järjestelmän puutuneisuutena voidaan pitää riittämättömyyttä tiedon keruussa.” (As a deficiency of this system, insufficiency in data collection can be regarded.) The construction can introduce discussions of problems, shortcomings, or gaps in data, processes, or theories, without asserting an absolute judgment.
