Puulõiketehnika refers to the various methods and tools used to cut down trees. These techniques are essential for forestry, logging, and land management. The specific approach often depends on the size and type of the tree, the surrounding environment, and the desired outcome, whether it's for timber harvesting, clearing land for development, or managing forest health.

Historically, axes and hand saws were the primary tools for felling trees. These required significant physical exertion and skill to execute safely and efficiently. With the advent of the industrial revolution, chainsaws became the dominant tool. Chainsaws, powered by gasoline or electricity, offer much greater speed and efficiency, though they also introduce new safety considerations.

Modern puulõiketehnika incorporates advanced safety equipment and techniques. This includes personal protective gear like helmets, eye protection, hearing protection, and cut-resistant clothing. Techniques such as the directional notch, also known as the felling notch or face cut, are crucial for controlling the fall of the tree. The notch, typically a wedge-shaped cut on the side of the tree where the fall is desired, is usually made first. A back cut is then made on the opposite side, slightly above the notch, leaving a hinge of wood to guide the tree's descent.

Professional loggers and foresters receive specialized training to master these techniques and prioritize safety. Environmental considerations also play a role, with techniques sometimes adapted to minimize damage to surrounding trees and the forest floor. In some cases, specialized equipment like harvesters, which can delimb and buck trees in addition to felling them, are used in large-scale operations.
