Puudutusained, also known as anesthetics, are medications used to induce anesthesia, a temporary state of numbness or loss of sensation. General anesthetics affect the entire body, causing a reversible loss of consciousness and sensation. They are used for minor procedures such as dental work, skin biopsies, or suturing wounds. Local anesthetics can be applied topically, injected near the target nerves, or administered epidurally or spinally for regional anesthesia. Common examples include lidocaine, bupivacaine, and ropivacaine. They work by preventing the transmission of pain signals along nerve fibers.

The selection of a puudutusaine depends on various factors including the type of procedure, the patient's health status, and the desired duration and extent of anesthesia. While generally safe when administered by trained professionals, puudutusained carry potential risks and side effects that must be carefully managed.
