Putukaviljastumisel, meaning "insect fertilization" in Estonian, refers to the process by which plants rely on insects for pollination. This is a crucial biological interaction for the reproduction of many flowering plant species. Insects, such as bees, butterflies, moths, flies, and beetles, visit flowers primarily to collect nectar and pollen, which serve as food sources. During these visits, pollen grains from the flower's anthers adhere to the insect's body. When the insect subsequently visits another flower of the same species, some of this pollen is transferred to the stigma, initiating fertilization and leading to the production of seeds and fruits.
The relationship between plants and their insect pollinators is often highly specific, with certain insects being
