Putrada

Putrada refers to a Hindu ritual observed by married couples who desire a male offspring. The name itself is derived from Sanskrit, with "putra" meaning son and "da" meaning giver, thus translating to "giver of sons." This ritual is primarily performed by Brahmins and certain other Hindu communities, although its observance can vary regionally.

The Putrada Ekadashi is the most prominent observance associated with this concept. Ekadashi refers to the eleventh day of the lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar. There are two Putrada Ekadashi days in a year, one in the waxing moon phase (Shukla Paksha) of the month of Shravana (July-August) and another in the waxing moon phase of Pausha (December-January). Devotees observe a fast on this day, abstaining from food and sometimes water, with the belief that this austerity pleases Lord Vishnu, who is believed to grant the boon of a son.

The rituals typically involve prayer, meditation, and chanting of mantras dedicated to Vishnu. Couples may also perform specific pujas or offerings. The fast is broken on the following day, Dwadashi, after offering prayers. While the ritual is specifically for a male child, some interpretations suggest it can also be for the well-being and prosperity of existing children. The underlying sentiment is a deep-seated desire for progeny and the continuation of family lineage, a significant cultural value in traditional Hindu society.
