Pussilakana

Pussilakana is a bed linen item used to encase a duvet or comforter. Its primary purpose is to protect the duvet from wear and to simplify cleaning, while also allowing the user to change the room’s appearance by swapping the cover. A pussilakana is typically rectangular and has an opening on one side, which is closed with buttons, a zipper, or a hidden flap. Many covers also include fabric ties at the internal corners to secure the duvet and prevent shifting.

Materials and variants vary. Common fabrics include cotton (often in weaves such as percale or sateen), linen, and blends such as cotton–polyester. Winter variants may use flannel or brushed fabric for extra warmth. Pussilakanoita (duvet covers) come in a wide range of colors and patterns, from solid tones to prints, allowing customization to match interior design.

Care and maintenance generally emphasize machine washing and dry handling. Cotton covers are typically machine washable; white or light colors may be laundered at higher temperatures, while colored fabrics are washed according to the care label. Most covers can be tumble dried on a low setting or line dried. It is common to iron or press the cover if desired, though many fabrics are designed to minimize wrinkling.

Sizes of pussilakana usually correspond to standard European bed sizes and vary by manufacturer. In Finland and other Nordic countries, common dimensions for duvet covers range from around 140×200 cm for smaller bedrooms to about 200×200 cm or 200×220 cm for larger duvets. The set is often sold with matching pillowcases (tyynynpäälliset) to complete the look.
