Purnea

Purnea is a sub-division and a significant urban town in the Purnia district of Bihar, India. It is situated on the banks of the Kosi River in the Himalayan foothills. As of the 2001 India census, Purnea town had a population of 1,22,006 residents.

The town is located approximately 373 kilometers northwest of Patna, the capital city of Bihar. Purnea was an important center of trade and commerce in ancient times, particularly due to its strategic location on the trade route connecting Lhasa, Tibet, with regions of Bengal and Bihar.

Purnea is well connected to other major cities of the region by road and rail. The Purnia Airport, located in the town, offers regular flight services to major cities in India. National Highway 31, which connects the eastern and western parts of India, passes through Purnea, enhancing its connectivity to the country's extensive network of roads. Furthermore, the town has a railway station that provides seamless connectivity to other cities in India.

Purnea has many educational institutions, including the residence of renowned Hindu saint Valmiki, which is a renowned pilgrimage site for Hindus. Main industries within the town include rice, wheat, and jute production. Agriculture and agricultural-based activities serve as significant economic drivers for the town.

Purnea is known for its cold weather in winters, with average low temperatures ranging from 4 to 10 degrees Celsius. This enables higher cultivation of wheat, potatoes, and other winter crops. The city features an unplanned development due to a sharp rise in the population. Despite this, the urban area experiences significant development in recent years with keen local government emphasis on upgrading businesses in and around the city.
