Pupálás

Pupálás is a traditional Romanian folk practice observed on the eve of Saint George's Day (Sânziene, also known as Drăgaica). This custom involves young women, typically unmarried, who engage in rituals believed to reveal their future husbands or ensure their fertility.

The practice varies geographically across Romania, but common elements include nocturnal activities. Young women might gather herbs believed to have magical properties, such as mugwort or dill, and perform specific chants or spells. Some traditions involve leaving these herbs under their pillow, hoping to dream of their future spouse.

Another aspect of pupálás can involve symbolic actions like carrying a doll, representing a child, or engaging in dances and games intended to attract good fortune and a suitable partner. In some regions, pupálás is associated with divination, where the young women might interpret signs in nature or use simple games of chance to predict aspects of their future marital life.

The practice is deeply rooted in agrarian societies and the desire for a prosperous future, both personally and agriculturally. While pupálás was once a widespread and significant folk custom, its observance has declined in many areas due to modernization and changing social customs. However, it remains a part of Romania's rich cultural heritage, often preserved in folklore and historical accounts.
