Puolustajana, or "defender" in Finnish, refers to a specific role in ice hockey, a popular winter sport in Finland and internationally. In hockey terminology, the defender is one of the three main positions on the ice, alongside forwards and a goaltender. The primary responsibility of a defender is to protect the team’s goal by preventing the opposing team from scoring. Defenders typically operate in the defensive zone, which is the area near their own net, and are tasked with blocking shots, intercepting passes, and preventing breakaways.

Defenders often work closely with the goaltender to create a strong defensive structure. They may also participate in offensive plays, particularly in power plays or when their team is down in numbers. Skilled defenders are known for their ability to read the game, anticipate plays, and make quick decisions under pressure. Physicality, endurance, and strong stickhandling skills are essential traits for a successful defender.

In Finnish hockey culture, defenders like Jukka Hentunen, Saku Koivu, and Teemu Selänne have been celebrated for their contributions to both domestic and international play. The Finnish national team, known as the "Leijonat" (Lions), has historically relied on strong defensive play to compete at high levels in international competitions such as the IIHF World Championship and the Winter Olympics.
