This model simplifies complex systems by treating objects as point masses, which possess mass but no volume or spatial extent. The locations of these point masses are precisely defined, allowing for calculations of forces, gravitational interactions, or other physical phenomena acting upon or between them.

The concept is frequently employed in simulations and theoretical analyses where the precise distribution of mass within an object is not critical to the problem being studied. For instance, in celestial mechanics, a planet or star can be approximated as a point mass when calculating its gravitational influence on another distant body.
