Pulsbilder, also known as pulsed electrical discharge machining (PEDM) or pulsed EDM, refers to a group of electrical discharge machining (EDM) processes that utilize pulsed electrical discharges to remove material. Unlike continuous EDM, where the discharge is sustained, pulsed EDM operates by generating discrete, high-energy electrical pulses. These pulses are typically in the form of short, controlled sparks or arcs that occur at a high frequency.

The fundamental principle behind pulsed EDM involves creating an electrical potential difference between a workpiece and an electrode, usually separated by a dielectric fluid. When the voltage exceeds the breakdown strength of the dielectric, a spark or arc forms, leading to localized melting and vaporization of material from the workpiece. The debris is then flushed away by the dielectric fluid. The pulsed nature of the process allows for better control over the energy delivered in each discharge, which can influence the material removal rate, surface finish, and electrode wear.

Variations of pulsed EDM exist, including traditional pulsed EDM, fast pulse EDM, and precise pulse EDM, each offering different characteristics in terms of pulse duration, frequency, and current. These techniques are employed in various industries, such as aerospace, automotive, and medical device manufacturing, for applications like drilling small holes, machining complex shapes, and creating intricate features in hard or electrically conductive materials where conventional machining methods are not feasible. The ability to precisely control the energy pulses makes pulsed EDM a valuable tool for achieving tight tolerances and fine surface finishes.
