PulpaSchacht

PulpaSchacht is a term of German origin, literally translating to "pulp shaft" or "pulp mine." It refers to a historical method of mining gypsum, a soft sulfate mineral. This mining technique was primarily employed in regions where gypsum deposits were relatively shallow and could be extracted using simple, non-industrialized methods.

The PulpaSchacht method involved digging vertical shafts into the gypsum layer. Once the desired depth was reached, miners would excavate horizontally, creating a network of tunnels. The gypsum was then broken down using basic tools and brought to the surface. This process was often labor-intensive and relied on manual extraction rather than heavy machinery.

This type of mining was common in the 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in areas with abundant gypsum, such as parts of Germany. The extracted gypsum was a valuable commodity, used extensively in construction for plaster and stucco, as well as in agriculture as a soil conditioner.
