Pullflöden

Pullflöden is a term used in textile manufacturing and design to describe a specific type of yarn characteristic. It refers to the tendency of a yarn to unravel or pull out from the fabric structure. This can occur due to several factors, including the yarn's construction, the way it is spun, and the way the fabric is woven or knitted.

Yarns with a looser twist are more prone to pullflöden. When a yarn is not tightly twisted, its individual fibers are less secured, making them more susceptible to snagging and pulling. Similarly, yarns made from staple fibers, which are short and need to be twisted to hold together, are more likely to exhibit pullflöden compared to continuous filament yarns. The manufacturing process of the fabric itself also plays a role. Fabrics with a looser weave or knit, or those with floats (areas where yarn bypasses several other yarns), can create more opportunities for pullflöden.

The consequence of pullflöden is the formation of unsightly loops or pulled threads on the surface of the fabric. These can detract from the fabric's aesthetic appeal and can sometimes lead to further unraveling. In apparel, this can manifest as snags. In upholstery or other home textiles, it can affect durability and appearance.

Textile manufacturers employ various techniques to minimize pullflöden. These include using yarns with higher twists, selecting appropriate fiber types, and optimizing the fabric construction. Finishing processes can also help to lock the yarns in place and reduce the likelihood of pulling. The careful selection of yarn and fabric construction is crucial in preventing this undesirable characteristic.
