Puhelinkappi

Puhelinkappi, also known as a telephone booth or call box, is a small, often enclosed structure designed to house a public telephone. Historically, these structures were a common sight in urban and rural areas, providing a private and sheltered space for making telephone calls.

The typical puhelinkappi is a freestanding unit, usually made of metal and glass, with a door that can be closed for privacy. Inside, a telephone is mounted on a wall or pedestal. Some designs also include a small seat or shelf. The design and materials of puhelinkapit have varied over time and by region, with some being quite elaborate and others purely functional.

The widespread adoption of mobile phones has led to a significant decline in the use and number of puhelinkapit. Many have been removed or repurposed, and their presence is now much less common than in the past. However, some older or historically significant puhelinkapit may still be preserved as relics of a bygone era of telecommunications. In some limited contexts, they might still be maintained for public access, especially in areas with limited mobile reception or for specific institutional purposes.
