Pughmatriser

Pughmatriser is a term sometimes encountered in design theory and workshop materials to refer to an informal extension of the Pugh matrix concept-selection method. There is no widely accepted definition in peer-reviewed sources, and the term may refer to different implementations or teaching examples rather than a standardized technique.

Etymology follows the Pugh matrix, named after Stuart Pugh, combined with “riser,” signaling an emphasis on elevating or advancing certain concepts during evaluation. The name suggests a deliberate step to raise promising candidates above others in the selection process.

Conceptually, a Pughmatriser can be described as a two-phase approach. First, a standard Pugh matrix is used to compare concepts against a baseline across a set of criteria. In the second phase, a supplementary “riser” step assigns additional weight or an extra scoring dimension to concepts that demonstrate strategic potential, manufacturability, or lower risk. The result is a revised ranking that prioritizes ideas that not only fit the criteria but also show stronger prospects for advancement.

Applications are largely informal. In design studios, classrooms, or early-stage product development, the method may help teams converge on a shortlist more quickly and provide a transparent rationale for advancing certain concepts. Limitations include the lack of standard definitions, potential subjectivity, and the possibility of duplicating existing multi-criteria methods without clear benefits.
