Psychographers

Psychographers are practitioners associated with psychography, the writing produced under what some traditions claim to be psychic influence or the subconscious mind. The term comes from the Greek psyche, meaning mind, and graphein, meaning to write. In historical discussions, psychography is most closely tied to automatic writing within spiritualist movements, where a person writes without deliberate conscious control and purportedly channels messages or insights from spirits or hidden facets of the mind.

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, spiritualist circles often described psychographers as conduits for communications from deceased interlocutors, guiding entities, or otherworldly intelligences. Sessions frequently involved pen and paper or typewriters and were presented as evidence of non-ordinary sources of knowledge, sometimes accompanied by trance states or altered awareness.

Scientific evaluation of psychography is cautious. Modern psychology and parapsychology generally regard automatic writing as a dissociative or automatistic phenomenon, heavily influenced by suggestion, context, and expectation rather than demonstrable paranormal agency. Replicable evidence supporting external paranormal communication is lacking. Some researchers examine the cognitive and motor processes behind spontaneous writing—stream-of-consciousness production, semantic priming, and automaticity—as explanations for psychographic outputs, treating the phenomenon as a psychological artifact.

Today, the term psychographer is rarely used in mainstream psychology. When encountered, it may refer to someone involved in automatic writing within historical or occult contexts, or, less specifically, to a writer who analyzes or documents psychological topics.
