Præparatet

Præparatet is the term used in Danish to refer to a prepared specimen used for scientific study, especially in anatomy, histology, and pathology. A præparat may be a single organ, a tissue sample, or a whole preserved organism, and it can be stored in jars, on slides, or displayed in museum settings. The term emphasizes that the specimen has undergone processes to halt decay and to reveal anatomical detail for observation and teaching.

Preparation and preservation of præparater typically involve collecting material with appropriate consent, followed by preservation to stabilize and reveal structures. Common methods include fixation with chemical agents such as formaldehyde or alcohol, which preserves tissue integrity. For microscopic study, tissues are dehydrated, embedded in paraffin or resin, and cut into thin sections that are stained to provide contrast. Whole organs or cadavers may be preserved by plastination, a modern technique that replaces water and fat with polymers to produce durable, odorless displays. In museums and teaching collections, præparater are often housed in jars with liquid preservatives or prepared as mounted preparations.
